Aid for sport hopefuls A

Local sporting hopefuls have been awarded grants to help with their training and

competition costs

THLETES from Dronfield and Coal Aston are among the up-and-coming sporting stars who have been chosen to receive part of a £2,750 bursary pot from Podium. A scheme which supports emerging talent in the world of sport, Podium awarded a group of 15 young athletes from NE Derbyshire up to £200 each to help them meet training and competitions costs, including travel, equipment and coaching fees.

Many of the athletes already compete for England or Great Britain, while others are part of a recognised development squad for their chosen sport. Both from Dronfield and members of the England Under 21 Bowls Squad and Coal Aston Bowls Club, 21-year-old Brian Gratton and 20-year-old James Hardwick received money from the Podium bursary, which is backed by Derbyshire’s sport and business scheme ICON. At just nine years old, Dronfield’s Adam Morewood is the Biketrial International Union World Champion. A pupil at St Andrew’s Primary School, Adam is also the European and British Biketrial Champion in the Poussin Class, for seven to nine year olds.

Completing the talented local quintet are two pupils at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, Elliot Beeden and Charlotte Dyson, both of Coal Aston. Thirteen-year-old Elliot is a skilled diver, having won three silver medals and a bronze at the British Junior Championships, as well as a silver and bronze at the G-Star Diving Championships and two silver medals at the Armada Cup.

NE Derbyshire District Council Leader, Coun Graham Baxter MBE, who was among those who met the athletes and congratulated them at a recent presentation, said: “We have many talented sports men and women across the district and through schemes like this we want to support them in their field.

“We’re delighted to hand out this funding to our local sporting stars of the future.”
