DECONTAMINATION

DDMAS mobile autonomous station can be transported by the customer’s truck for CBRNe decontamination/detoxification of personnel, vehicles, materials, sensitive equipment, and terrain. Dr. Stefano Miorotti outlines a new approach for decontamination

oday, talking about equipment and instrument for an updated and efficient army of our present time

no longer means listing all sort of weapons, guns and sophisticated sensitive equipment used as powerful means of offense. It means talking about defence, budgets and financial capability. It can be seen as solving a basic problem - finding a solution when some unexpected and unpredictable action takes place - as happens in a terrorist attack. A multispectral decontaminant applicable with different systems is necessary in order to be able to give an appropriate answer to various threats not only limited to chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and biological warfare agents (BWAs) but also to toxic industrial chemicals and materials (TICs and TIMs) and emerging diseases.

Choosing a decontaminant The operational generic aspects and parameters to be considered in selecting decontaminants must relate to their decon/ detox capabilities. The product must be:

 Usable in different situations for BWAs and CWAs as decontamination/detoxification and for RN (radiological/nuclear) decontamination - but also as preventive

decontamination/detoxification or sanitisation before redeployment from the mission into an area of the world with poor hygienic conditions.

 Effective against TIMs. From an operational point of view another

advantage of having one single product is related to the early detection phase and the capability to face immediately unknown threats. From a logistic point of view, the advantage is enormous in terms of storage cost, transportation, training of personnel and disposal of the product after its shelf life has expired. Finally, particular attention has to be made to safety and environmental impact

aspects. The solution must not be dangerous for personnel and to materials, and must have negligible impact in the environment. Cristanini’s aim is offer to civil and military

agencies decontamination systems and products suitable for mass decontamination and capable of dealing with CBRN emergencies. BX 24 Decon/Detox powder has been tested in worldwide independent laboratories and has been shown to be effective against the above-named substances and as a single product providing the capability to perform a full decon/detox action.
