fromone tech to another
gel&all of the confusion
Lisa Dunlop highlights the developments in Gel technology
Gel, Gel, Gel… somany to choose from, somany different types, price brackets, performing abilities, colour ranges, solvent levels, the list goes on.How do you make your choices?
I have gone to exhibition after exhibition in the last two years searching the stands, asking the experts and digging for as much information as I can and I believe that I have now gained enough information to be able to pass the ‘torch of nail findings’on.
There are now what seems to be four main generations of Soak-off Gel available on themarket and choosing the right one can be a costly
adventure. The best advice that I can give to you is to always research and choose the products that are right for you and your clientele. What youmay find to be the perfect match for your needsmay be the next techs downfall.
soak-off gels
Soak-off Gel has actually been around since the 1980s; these types of Gels were marketed as a Gel that was applied like an enhancement but was advised to be removed after either the first desired wear time had been reached or the first fill had
beenmade. They were expensive for the tech to purchase and so the tech had to pass this cost onto their clientsmaking it an expensive
hobby.AsTechs, we want to be able to sell our clients a treatment that they will be able to afford to come back and have time and time again, and so costings to the tech are a fundamental first issue that needs resolving.
The next generation quickly ties in with the third generation in launch time, was Soak-off in a
pot. This product was similar to the first generation Gels but had an upgrade in its ingredients and was hugelymore cost effective to the tech. It was designed to go on with the look of varnish but due to the Gel ingredient base, it was greatly beneficial to any kind of damaged, naturally weak or generally any kind of ‘problem’ natural nail. Due to its thinness and ingredient base, this product was the first kind to give an overlay / varnish to the nail but that would literally soak off in fiveminutes.
hybrid gels
The third generation was the ‘Hybrid’, probably themost successful launch of any kind of nail product in the last 15 years.Techs wentmad for it, loving the fact that clients who had been sat at home painting their own nails were now flooding into their salons for the hassle- free, chip-free nail
varnish. This became amulti-million pound industry within its own right in the first 12 months, leaving not only nail techs raving about their brilliance but also
