SUDLOWS CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

MANCHESTER AND London-based communications infrastructure specialist, Sudlows, is celebrating its 100-year history. Manchester entrepreneur Albert Edward Sudlow founded the company in 1912. He was a Victorian gas engineer who was quick to champion a new alternative technology known as electricity. As one of the oldest electrical

fi rms in Manchester, and a founding member of the ECA, Sudlows continues its philosophy of constant innovation by delivering sustainable and energy effi cient building systems and data centres. John Collins, Sudlows’ managing director, said: ‘In what will be our most successful year of trading, the company will take time to acknowledge and celebrate our long and brilliant heritage.’

Victorian mill goes solar

A LISTED VICTORIAN COTTON MILL in Oldham has become one of the fi rst in the country to switch to solar energy in a project that aims to revitalise the best of industrial age architecture with cutting-edge green energy.

Sundog Energy complied with strict English Heritage requirements and overcame signifi cant wind loading challenges on the fi ve-storey Devon Mill – which was completed in 1908 when Lancashire led the world in textile production – to transform it into what is thought to be the largest rooftop solar power station in the north of England.

The 143.3 kWp solar PV installation is the equivalent of 30 typical household systems. More than 600 solar PV modules produce enough power to generate 110 MWh of electricity per year, saving around 65 tonnes of CO2

), with power to spare for export to the National Grid.

Bill Roberts, managing director of Sundog Energy, said: ‘This highly successful installation proves the viability of solar energy for historic commercial buildings. An installation

of this type gives payback in eight years or less, and the solar PV system will last for decades. It’s been built to last, with future generations in mind – like the mill itself.’
