There are a number of excellent proving devices available to ensure voltage indicators and test lamps can be checked prior to, and immediately after, a circuit has been proved. And as manufacturers become more and more aware of the importance of confi rmation by proving devices, they are often supplied as bundles, with voltage testers and lamps to encourage routine testing of the indicators every time they are used. Nowadays, the bundles even include lock off kits to ensure that the supply cannot be re-energised while you are working.
What about multifunction testers and their suitability for the domestic and industrial market? Multifunction test instruments can perform all the tests required to evaluate the safety of an electrical installation in accordance with UK and international standards covered by Part P and the 17th Edition of IEE Wiring Regulations. However, multifunctional devices are not, in our opinion, as good as a simple, dedicated voltage indicator or lamp for proving dead. The testing and measuring function are a different job to proving dead, and separate instruments are better. After all, multi-function testers have to be used on both live and dead circuits for different tests, and proving dead is a task where absolute clarity is key. Similarly, multimeters, with many ranges, are not recommended, as it’s too easy to select the wrong range by mistake. Because of all the other functions these sophisticated instruments can perform, it can sometimes be easy to misinterpret the information received. Where operator safety is of prime importance, we have
to realise the most important factor is the electrician’s safety, and this is why we fi rmly believe that simplistic testing using a voltage indicator or lamp and proving device will clearly highlight any testing problems.
The proving device will prove that the voltage indicator is working, which is the most important consideration.
