have of creating a new revenue stream. For example, once you are in your customer’s home, take time to understand what devices will be connected at various points in each room. Becoming more aware of how the sockets and wiring you are installing or updating will be used, enables you to suggest to your customer that you install powerline devices where they would be most needed. Without advocating that you explore your customer’s possessions too intently, a quick glance at the back of a new-looking television will reveal whether an ethernet network port is present, suggesting that the television has web browsing and catch-up TV streaming capabilities. A number of mid- to high-range models are now internet- enabled and can connect to a wide range of video streaming services, from BBC iPlayer through to Skype. Armed with this kind of information, the savvy electrical contractor can turn data networking from a service offered when requested to something that they recommend.
Customers may find it hard to argue when it’s pointed out that installing a standard socket for this particular television would only be solving half a problem; a socket incorporating powerline networking would significantly extend the functionality of their shiny new TV set.
