Help ELECSA assessor’s son achieve his Olympic dream
WITH ONLY A FEW MONTHS TO GO UNTIL THE LONDON 2012 Olympic Games, Olympics fever is already in the air at the ELECSA and ECA offi ces. Tony Grabarz, a technical assessor based in Cambridge, is the proud parent of current world number one high jumper, Robbie Grabarz, who is training hard to gain a place in Team GB. But having lost his funding last year, Robbie would like your support to help him realise his dream. Robbie, who took the world top spot in January when he cleared a personal best of 2.34 metres at Wuppertal, Germany, is now in prime position to be selected for Team GB – although he won’t know until the National Championships in Birmingham, in June. His achievement is all the more remarkable because Robbie, along with the rest of the high jump team, lost his funding late last year. But, he’s not letting this deter him from pursuing his dream to compete this summer. He says: ‘I love what I am doing and I’m putting my all into my training. I wouldn’t have it any other way.’ This is where ECA members can help. We have launched a fund to help Robbie achieve his Olympic dream and we’re asking you to pledge your support. All donations will go towards helping Robbie buy the kit he needs and help him fund his training. To make a donation, contact ELECSA Customer Services on 03333 218 220 and tell us it’s for Robbie’s Olympic Fund. Alternatively, send us a cheque, payable to ECA/ELECSA – mark the back ‘Robbie’s Olympic Fund’ – to: ECA Certifi cation Ltd, Mansfi eld Business Centre, Ashfi eld Avenue, Mansfi eld NG18 2AE.
WHAT’S NEW ON THE ECA’S ENERGY SOLUTIONS E-FORUM?
By Bill Wright, head of Energy Solutions T
HE ECA’S ‘RENEWABLES & Microgeneration e-forum’ has been hugely popular with registered members, who can share knowledge and questions and keep up to date with the latest developments in what has turned out to be a very fast moving area of business. Following this early success, the forum was recently developed into a new-look ‘Energy Solutions’ e-forum’. The new upgrade is a response to forum users, who told ECA that they would also like to talk about, and fi nd out more about, the latest developments across the range of energy solutions.
Recent discussions on the e-forum The forum has been particularly busy in recent months. Major changes to the Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) created huge interest, notably when the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) lost its fi nal legal appeal. Another major talking point was the requirement, from 1 April, for an Energy Performance Certifi cate of level ‘D’ and above to qualify for the best rate of tariffs.
ECA members use the forum to obtain technical and legislative information and to take part in discussions with ECA staff and members on current and future areas of interest. Members have been able to contribute directly via the forum consultations on Part L of the Building Regulations and the simplifi cation of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC).
A popular early topic for the wider forum has been energy-effi cient lighting, including discussions about the use of LEDs. More widely, there have been recent discussions about the applicability of voltage optimisation to domestic premises, and signifi cant forum interest in energy price trends, with many major energy users forecasting between a 50 per cent and 100 per cent increase within fi ve years. This is a sobering prospect, but it will continue to bring energy effi ciency to the forefront of customers’ minds. Signing-up to the Energy Solutions e-forum is easy, and new members are welcome. It is available to ECA registered members only. To sign up, visit:
