[ Spotlight: Commercial PV ] Other measures
Of course, a PV CAPEX (likely to be well in excess of £10,000) must compete with the cost of other energy performance measures, such as LEDs or better heating control, passive energy saving measures or entirely different spending priorities. It is generally understood that, even when you have the cash, the best place to start when reducing bills (and carbon emissions) is ‘low to no cost’ energy saving measures. Yet PV can fi t well with a comprehensive building energy saving package (which may be needed to get a building up to an EPC ‘D’ rating anyway). It’s worth noting that the solar PV installation can count towards the ‘D’ rating, though you’d have to apply for the EPC after installation before you can get the FIT, so there would be a slight delay in obtaining the tariff. Assessing the commercial and practical pros and cons of PV is not straightforward. Installers who have ‘been around the commercial block’ will have experience of PV local planning rules and the wonders of grid connection, notably for systems over 16A per phase. The variables surrounding PV don’t allow a generally applicable payback time, but the ballpark could be around 10-12 years (depending on unknowns such as future electricity prices). A competent accountant is best placed to advise on the ins and outs of PV CAPEX and FIT taxation, but a competent installer is invaluable to successful commercial PV installation.
