and prone to cracking. This is a particular cause for concern within data centres, where the possibility of microscopic metal fibres or ‘zinc whiskers’ resulting in equipment failure or short circuit is a perceived risk. While that possibility is quite remote, some manufacturers offer epoxy coated, zinc plated steel wire tray to seal in the zinc plating. Asked what the future holds for cable management design, Schneider Electric’s David Williams, opines: ‘Although cable sizes and volumes are increasing, we are seeing a move to sleeker and less obtrusive profiles – perhaps combined with the use of more floor and ceiling systems or power poles.’

Data protection

There’s little doubt that the importance of cable management in protecting data communications cabling has been the catalyst for developing solutions with greater capacity and flexibility.

High bandwidth Category 6, 6A and 7 four pair twisted pair cables have precise manufacturing tolerances and require specific and careful management. This includes greater separation between power and data and, in some circumstances, aluminium or steel screening. It is also imperative to maintain the minimum bend radius through which the cable needs to travel.

Marco Cable Management’s business development manager, Steve Davis, warns: ‘Whichever high density structured cabling solution is selected by the client or

Back in black

Marco Cable Management has supplied its Elite trunking in charcoal grey as part of a new blackout drama room at Farnley Park High School, Leeds. The £23m Building Schools for the Future programme, being carried out by ECA member Interserve, will provide a host of new facilities for the secondary school. Marco is supplying cabling solutions to the electrical contractor across the large scale site, and has developed a bespoke colour specification to blend seamlessly with the new drama centre.

The Elite trunking will house a variety of power and data cables throughout the building and Pete Massey, sales representative at Marco, said: ‘We are always keen to help customers achieve their needs and, in this case, we were able to provide a good colour match that sits well with the wider environment of the drama room. It’s important for us as a company to be flexible and deliver bespoke solutions when and where requested.’ Construction work at Farnley Park High School is set for completion in July 2012. Once finalised, new facilities will include a new main school hall, learning resource centre and a number of activity studios.
