Founded: 1991 Independent Location: Cary, NC, USA www.epicgames.com

As famous in the development community for its tools as it is for its games, Epic has thrived as a business in the past year. 2011 saw the Unreal Engine

continue to rise in status, Gears of War 3 cause a sensation at retail with three million sales in one week, and Epic subsidiary ChAIR Entertainment again prove the potential of triple-A on iOS with the second game in the Infinity Blade series. Initially founded under the name of Potomac Computer Systems in 1991 by Tim Sweeney, today Epic plays home to a number of games development ‘celebrities’, including Cliff Bleszinski and Mark Rein. They seem to check their star-status at the door though, and the firm is best known for spotting the next big thing in games tech.
