A phenomenal showing for Battlefield 3 hasn’t just reasserted EA’s share of the first- person shooter market, it also underlined DICE’s credence. Last year’s commercial

success had been a long time coming for the Battlefield brand, overseen exclusively by the Swedish studio. While last year’s console and PC game was the third major entry in the series, it was the franchise’s 17th outing. Over the years, it has been a trailblazer on PC, with an emphasis on multiplayer. But Battlefield 3 combined single- player, multiplayer, and an online service called Battlelog to offer a true challenge to Call of Duty. It didn’t topple Activision’s

grip on the category, but it at least caused a flesh wound, scored new territory, and won over a new audience of fans.
