Harvard H. Erdman Harvard H. Erdman, 89, of Wautoma, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2011. Erdman was the band director at Wautoma High School for 38 years. He played with the Jack Opie and Larry Woodbury dance band in the 1940s, 50s and 60s and with the Wisconsin Dutchmen in the 1960s and 70s. Erdman was also an active member of the Packer Band for 20 years, and served as the choir director at Peace Lutheran Church for many years. He was married to Vivian Zeinert.
Wayne R. Jipson Wayne R. Jipson, 80, of Whitefish Bay, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2012. Jipson received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in music education from the University of Iowa. He taught junior high in Oshkosh, and was the director of vocal music at Nicolet High School for 29 years. He also conducted two area church choirs. Jipson served as president of Wisconsin Music Educators Association, and spent many years as a music clinician and adjudicator all over the state. Jipson was also an accomplished writer, contributing articles to music journals and authoring the textbook The High School Vocal Music Program.
Theresa J. Kroes Theresa J. Kroes, 23, an Onalaska native, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2011. Kroes received her bachelor’s degree from UW-Stevens Point. Kroes was a gifted pianist and recently accepted a contract to teach junior and senior high school vocal music in North Fond du Lac, where she had just finished her first week teaching summer school.
George Munagian George Munagian, 66, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012. Munagian earned a music education degree from UW-Oshkosh and received his master’s from Eastern Illinois University. He began teaching in Wisconsin Rapids School District in 1970. Munagian actively worked with Wisconsin School Music Association. He also played viola with the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra for many years. He was married to Jan Draxler for 32 years.
William H. Ross William H. Ross, 67, of Port Washington, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Ross received a bachelor of science in music from St. Cloud University and his master’s at Central Michigan University. He taught in Montose, MI and Oconto, before coming to Port Washington. Ross was the vocal music director at Port Washington High School where he directed all the choirs, the high school musicals and the Port Washington Summer Theater musicals. Ross was also the choir director at Marquette University and sang in the church choirs of Crossroads Presbyterian and Immanuel Presbyterian. He was in his 46th
year of marriage with Lonie Wohlert.
Elaine A. Smiley Elaine A. Smiley, 68, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2011. Smiley received her bachelor’s in education and voice, as well as her master’s in music education from UW-Madison. Smiley taught music at Waunakee High School and several other area schools. She sang in four choirs and directed the Capitol Chordsmen, State Line Harmony Chorus and Yahara River Sweet Adeline Chorus. She was married to Tom Smiley for 48 years.
