Because each computer in the music suite is networked, Mr. Anderson can cue up the Logic file on his laptop and play the recorded takes from there – a terrific time- saving strategy!

Scott Vandermeuse directs the orchestra, class guitar and he also teaches a unique class called “Creating Music” which em- phasizes music theory and composition. The class often uses software programs such as Garage Band, Finale and some- times Noteflight. One particularly interest- ing project that Mr. Vandermeuse has his students do in this class is a story project where students pick a short story such as a fairy tale. They will analyze the story and create musical themes for the characters, important events and other story elements. They then organize the themes according to the story’s outline. The story is recited while the music the students have cre- ated is being played as accompaniment. Students can easily assess whether or not their themes fit the story.

Mr. Vandermeuse also uses Google Apps extensively. Using a Google site he created and a video camera, Mr. Vandermeuse of- ten records his students so they can watch and listen to themselves perform. The videos are uploaded to the Google site and students access their own 30-45 second videotaped performance. Using Google Docs, students complete a short online as- sessment form and write a few comments on their performance. Mr. Vandermeuse has his students do this once every couple months during the school year.

For the last quarter-century, with the com- bined support of administrators, school board members and the community, there have always been adequate funds to meet the technology needs for the entire build- ing. In addition to providing the equipment needed to serve VAHS’s approximately 1,500 students, there are also sufficient time and resources allocated for training

staff and teachers how to expertly use the new equipment and software. “Our Administrators are highly dedicated to having technology available,” said Eric Anderson. “They have done a lot for every department.”
