Curriculum Our department philosophy includes the following: “The Waunakee Community School District Music Department, K-12, believes that music is an integral part of a student’s overall education. The music program strives to establish for every student a lasting relationship with music

that provides satisfaction, enjoyment, and personal growth during the school years and throughout life. Students are involved in musical experiences both as music mak- ers and as listeners.”

The primary focus is ensuring our cur- riculum is based on national and state standards and designed to spiral from K-12. (For information on specific course

offerings and performance ensembles we encourage you to visit our district’s web site at www.waunakee.k12.wi.us.) In ad- dition to meeting educational standards, we also strive for the following:

• Offer a range of programs and musical experiences for ALL students.

• Try to keep things fresh, interesting and enjoyable for students. Innovate!

• Recognize and emphasize “Creativity through music.”

Innovation and continuous improve- ment is supported district-wide. We are encouraged by the school board and ad- ministration to take risks, be innovative and creative and develop new courses and units (i.e. jazz improvisation, music technology). We also recognize and utilize certain talents and interests of our music staff and have been able to obtain district development project grants for support of unique opportunities. (i.e. fiddle band; middle school general music mid-eastern drumming).

Looking Forward Together

In summary, working together as a depart- ment and focusing on those things we can control – collaboration, communication and curriculum – have been instrumental in building sustainable support for mu- sic education in Waunakee. As we look forward together, challenges and oppor- tunities will continue to change. How we choose to react, or influence these changes, will make a difference to students and how our profession is regarded.

We have no reason to move away from our current way of thinking and behaving. So far, it has stood the test of time, enabling us to evolve as a music staff family and our music programs to thrive.
