“Reach out to someone who is doing
something that you think would be good for your students and find out how they did it.”
Grant writing has been huge – my involve- ment is usually finding the applicable grant and turning over the actual writing to a parent who is more skilled and expe- rienced than myself.
How Do Other People Do It?
All of our situations are unique and our jobs are full already, so how can we do more? Again, I think utilizing our great state resources is often a missed oppor- tunity. You may know that I am partial to the “Essentially Ellington” program sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center. If you know the program, you know that bands from the state of Washington are prominent in the national finals. You know what other state is prominent – WISCON- SIN! We have many talented educators in our backyard who are finding ways to get it done in a variety of ways. Congratulations to Eau Claire North, Beloit Memorial and Lake Geneva for representing Wisconsin in this prestigious national event this spring! Each one of those schools has dif- ferent demographic and unique challenges – how do they do it? We can all learn from their great examples and many others from around our state.
Don’t get me wrong, success is not neces- sarily winning festivals and competitions, but at some level, it represents a certain degree of organization that we may be able to apply to our programs. Try to think of programs in your area and maybe make contact with someone and ask, “How did you do that?”
Wisconsin School Musician
These trying economic and social times can really stress us out. If we feel like we are on an island and suffering alone, that can make it worse. Reach out to someone who is doing something that you think would be good for your students and find out how they did it. You may need to ap- proach it differently, but there may be a solution that you hadn’t thought of that
arises from your conversation with a col- league. I think it was Red Green who said, “We are all in this together.”
