end, while sister 7081 still retained much of its Chinese look. The day’s assignment was to pull 7,200 tons of freight from Iowa City to Rock Island. This tonnage would be the heaviest freight powered by double-headed steam in the U.S. since the end of the steam era in the late 1950s. I had been graciously offered a seat in one
of the business cars for the trip by IAIS chairman Henry Posner III. This was one event that was going to be best appreciated trackside, however, so I reluctantly turned down his offer to join the chasing contingent out on the highway for the day. A large gathering of fans had congregated
on the two bridges spanning the IAIS yard watching the proceedings as the engines were inspected and readied for their trip.
Everyone scrambled to get into position as the QJ’s made their move to couple onto the freight, with the business cars attached to the rear. A number of fans and curious on- lookers congregated on the Summit Street overpass to capture the impressive depar- ture of the double-headed freight. The Carstens Publications contingent
chasing the trip consisted of me and my brother Bruce in the lead car, with associate editor Otto Vondrak and director of market- ing George Riley in a second car (we had come to Iowa City from different directions) and LINESIDE LEGACY columnist Jeff Terry and his family in a third car. Fortunately, I had scouted the route the
day before and had even chased a freight from Iowa City into Rock Island, so we had
