A Royal Farewell

Part One - In 1979 former Canadian Pacific “Royal Hudson” number 2839 was leased by the Southern Railway to operate on their steam excur- sion program. The 75” drivered 4-6-4 would be the closest in speed to the famous Southern PS-4 4-6-2’s that powered passenger trains before dieselization. We enjoy exciting action as 2839 runs fast and hard while sporting a Southern PS-4 whistle while under the Southern Railway banner. Two days chasing the first runs from Alexandria, VA to Atlanta, GA. The engine is still lettered Canadian Pacific for this run. Then we see trips

from Cincinnati to Danville in Kentucky during 1979, and includes such famous locations as High Bridge, and Erlanger Hill as it climbs from the Ohio Valley. Unusual cool weather for a one-way trip toward Louisville, Kentucky and see several start-up scenes, as well as hard working on Erlanger Hill once again. Fantastic live audio from these original super 8 sound movies. This will be one of your favorite shows!!! 47 Minutes of exciting mainline steam action. Film shot 1979, DVD Copyright 2012. Natural sounds and narration. $28.39

Part Two - We begin with an unusual 3 day operation over July 4-6, 1979 on Chesapeake & Ohio’s line from Lexington to Ashland, KY (now gone), plus south along the Clinchfield Railroad. Then its Southern trackage from

Johnson City to

Newport, TN, featuring rare “Independence Limited” mileage. Next we head to Lexington, for 2 days of action in June of 1980. On Saturday there are two roundtrips to Danville, and we ride one and chase the other. Nice views out the vestibule with 2839 work- ing upgrade from High Bridge. Then a roundtrip from Lexington to Oneida, TN through the rugged rathole in southern Kentucky. We wrap up the show with a 2-day run back to Alexandria for the “Farewell to 2839” excursion. This was a medium size train and there was some spirit- ed running once again in cold clear weather. After 1980 this engine ran only one more time. it. Again, great live audio reproduction. 50 Minutes of exciting mainline steam action. Film shot 1979-80, DVD copy- right 2012. Natural sounds and narration. $28.39

some idea of what we wanted to do. Our first shot would be a choice of either the grain el- evator at Downey or the nicely restored ex- Rock Island depot at West Liberty. Since we thought the open spaces at the elevator would show the double-header better, we got out of Iowa City and set up in Downey and waited. The wait wasn’t long, however, and soon the train came charging through with both QJ’s running with a clean stack. Next up would be the bridge over the

Cedar River at Moscow. The previous day while chasing the freight, the sun was on the south side of the bridge and we had to get permission from a local property owner to shoot the train. With the steam freight run- ning about an hour later, we found the sun moving to the north side of the bridge and a wide open public park available to accom- modate the numerous carloads of fans that descended on the town. It turned out to be one of the best shots of the chase.

The record-setting freight crosses the Cedar River at Moscow, Iowa (right). The October 2011 R&R showed the double- header passing the silos at Walcott, Iowa (below).

Here are plans for roundhouses, diesel sheds, water towers, track scales, pump houses, icing platforms, ash hoists and pits, wood and concrete coaling tow- ers, coaling ramp, sand towers, dispatcher’s offices, telegraph office, phone box, signal towers, flood light tower, yard offices, and more.

Many of the structure types in this volume are long gone: coal- ing towers, water towers, ash hoists. We’ve gone back over fifty years to find representative examples of a wide variety of railroad buildings once commonly seen on railroads from coast to coast. We’ve in- cluded diesel facilities as well. Whether you scratch build or prefer kit building, there is much for you in this handy volume.
