to SP’s penchant for headlight clusters. Even Werkema can usually be found up
front at Winterail alongside Vic Neves in the “control room” keeping all of the A/V stuff humming along. Well, Evan’s no slouch with the camera, either, as proved by his wonder- ful 15 minute show called “Madera Concer- to.” The show documents the changes that came to this small town nestled in the San Joaquin Valley, when both the Amtrak sta- tion and a wooden trestle were replaced in 2010. Evan’s show creatively documented the changes as structures were replaced while train service continued throughout the projects. It was very interesting to see the work of months condensed down to a few key images over days. It was a nice change of pace as Winterail wound down into the evening hours. Next up was a joint show put together by
Mel Patrick and Miško Kranjec, focusing on various time-elapse scenes. There were some very interesting scenes set to music, everything from trains passing in the night to the work of a classification yard to the passing of customers on a platform. It was interesting to see how the collaboration be- tween these two talented photographers fit together so seamlessly. Winterail 2012 wrapped up with a pre- sentation of the work of Joel Jensen called, “Steam: An Enduring Legacy.” Folks may recognize the material as having appeared in Joel’s latest book produced by W.W. Nor- ton. Produced by the Center for Railroad Photography & Art, this was an enjoyable show that featured voice-over from Joel ex- plaining his connection to the men and ma-
chines of steam railroading. For those of you who still feel that modern steam railroading is “fake” and not “real railroading,” I think Joel’s work would convince you otherwise. Dramatic black and white photography takes us throughout the West, documenting operations of the SP 4449 and the UP 844 on main line excursions, while following up with detours down the Heber Valley, the Nevada Northern, and the Durango & Sil- verton. “Tourist” or not, these are hard working railroad environments, and Joel’s unique perspective seems to wash away any trace of saccharine “touristy” notions. A wonderful show, and a great way to close out Winterail 2012. Winterail is a wonderful and enjoyable
event, thanks to the attention to detail by Vic and his “cast of thousands.” It takes a lot of work to make an event like this success- ful, and we might not realize what it takes to make sure everything goes smoothly. Kudos to Vic and his crew for a job well done! Sunday morning, we were up early and
headed down to the Niles Canyon Railway, where we enjoyed the hospitality of a photo freight charter with their restored Western Pacific F7 918D and Quincy Railroad 2-6-2T No. 2. After that, we headed to Emeryville to shoot a couple of Amtrak trains and grabbed some lunch. Then it was off to Pinole to grab some trains running along the bay. The prize of the day was catching what we thought was the final run of the Reno Fun Train at Pinole Beach at Hercules with two Amtrak heritage units on the point (see RAILNEWS). A fine way to close out my Cali- fornia adventure! — OTTO M. VONDRAK
