track at Wilton, and we caught a break here as we went over the IAIS on an overhead bridge. The train had come to a stop at North Star siding for servicing. This allowed the photo line to reconvene downtown and set up for the shot of the train passing the Wilton depot, although the shot was marred by a poorly-placed pine tree that blocked much of the building. The wait seemed to take forever and the sun was making its march towards the west to put the chase in backlighting. A few of us ventured into the sleepy town to search out cold drinks and bags of ice to replenish our coolers. Eventu- ally the train came through and the chase was on again. Up next for us was the shot passing the
grain silos at Walcott. The train came hum- ming through here with smoke out of both locomotives. This would be the cover shot for the October 2011 R&R.
Finally, it was down to one last decision.
Do we get the train on the median running down a quiet brick street in Davenport, or set up on the Government Bridge as the train crossed the Mississippi between Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois? Here we all had our own ideas and the Carstens group broke up. Bruce and I finished with the shot of the train entering Rock Island coming off the bridge. Otto and George took the shot in Davenport, then broke off to attend to some business related to getting our booth set up for Train Festival. For the next several days the two IAIS
steam locomotives, along with Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765 and a variety of smaller steamers, would wow the crowds at Train Festival 2011. Looking back, the pure raw energy of the record-breaking main line run into Rock Island was a great preamble for the slate of events planned for later that week! —STEVE BARRY
