Bay and Angkor Wat. Halong Bay also benefits from Bhaya Cruises’ launch this month of two new 32-cabin Au Co cruisers. Avalon Waterways has a new dedicated Vietnam, Cambodia and China brochure and a new river cruiser, the Avalon Angkor. Angkor will be the first ship in the industry to cruise from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap. Victoria Hotels & Resorts is
offering ‘sidecar safaris’ of Hoi An, Hue and the Laos border via a WWII motorcycle. It also operates a luxury train to Sapa and Chau Doc-Phnom Penh speedboat transfers. Vietnam-based Luxury Travel Vietnam, which claims to be the country’s first high-end tour operator, has created a tour with a focus on UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Indochina. The journey covers Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos including six World Heritage Sites. Travellers land in Luang Prabang, Laos, and then fly to Vietnam, ending
the journey in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The trip includes the historical sites
of Hue, Hoi An and Myson in Vietnam, and a cruise on Halong Bay; Luang Prabang Town in Laos; and Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

quite ambitious plans and are already talking about increasing frequency by the end of the year, which is great for the region as a whole. “Also, more hotels are opening in Vietnam including Anantara and Six Senses. Cambodia and Laos’s growth is more limited, Vietnam is definitely the big mover and shaker, while Burma is a big story in what we call the Greater Mekong Region (Thailand, Indochina and Burma), and in the next five years I think we’ll see quite a lot more infrastructure. “We’re hoping to have some UK road shows this year with representatives of Indochina countries coming over to participate as none have tourist boards based here.”
From the Front Line LESLEY WRIGHT
International Sales and Marketing Manager Travel Indochina
“Indochina sold extremely well in January with trade sales up over 40% year on year. Our Mekong River cruising between Vietnam and Cambodia is in high demand. Twelve 12- and 19-day packages on the new Jahan and sister-ship Jayavarman are
selling on the quality of the vessels, on-board service and the all-round touring experience.”
NANDITA PATEL Far East Product Manager Funway Holidays “Overall we have seen
healthy forward sales for Indochina. The destination really has been greatly enhanced by the new direct flights, together with easy connecting services to other fascinating destinations in the region like Luang Prabang, Siem Reap & Phnom Penh.
Funway has reworked its existing Vietnam escorted tour programme to co-ordinate with these new flights”
STEVE JOHNSON Managing Executive Inspired by Asia “Indochina is selling better
than ever thanks to Vietnam Airlines’ new direct flights. In Vietnam the most popular route is to combine Hanoi or Saigon or both with Hoi An, which offers the perfect combination of an excellent beach with an interesting town that’s really easy to stroll or cycle through”
