Where is the state of the maintenance industry? I would describe it as relatively healthy yet in a state of flux. The landscape is changing quickly driven by two key dynamics—the impact of escalating and uncertain fuel prices and increased control of the aftermarket by the OEMs. In order to deal with the ever present threat of increased fuel prices and new environmental regulations the airline industry has turned to new fuel efficient aircraft and engines. But as we all know the global airline industry has suffered through limited profitability in recent years—based on IATA’s projection 2012 should be no different. So how does a struggling industry retool? It turns to the lease market and OEM backed agreements. This is having a major impact on the MRO environment. The lessors, who are well on their way to controlling more than 50 percent of the active fleet, have typically relied on OEM authorized repair sources, and long term service agreements are baked into most of the OEM backed agreements. This situation has a significant impact on independent solution providers and in many respects limits the competitive environment.

How is 2012 looking so far in terms of the health of the maintenance industry? Our projections suggest that 2012 should be a good year—not great, but good. The shop visit forecast looks positive. From our perspective—being focused on advanced engine components —we’re watching very closely to see if the recent headwind created by parted-out engines continues. Bottom line—we’re cautiously optimistic. How’s the regulatory environment right now? Is there any legislation coming up that might impact your business? Now that FAA Reauthorization has passed without negatively impacting the Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreements (BASA), we’re keeping a close eye on some smaller issues, but nothing critical. What will be the biggest challenges your business will face in the next three to five years? Finding the best way to leverage our value chain in this ever changing MRO environment.
