the kind of transcutaneous disruption of adipocytes seen with the Liposonix system. ‘The only comparable therapy would be cryolipolysis … which is limited to treating fewer body areas, won’t create tightening, and has no chance of improving cellulite,’ he explained. ‘Our research with the Liposonix Model 1 system demonstrated an average non-invasive circumference reduction of approximately 4.8 cm with concurrent skin tightening. With the new device the treatment is even more comfortable for the patient than before, and easier to perform due to the new software and both the size and maneuverability of the new handpiece. We’re seeing initial results with the Liposonix Model 2 system that are at least similar to what we previously achieved.’ ‘Although I was initially delighted

by its reduced size, elegant design, and appearance,’ said practising dermatologist Thomas Proebstle, (Mannheim, Germany), ‘the real advantages of the Liposonix Model 2 system are the easier replacement of the transducer tips, and dramatically improved software that provides the user with additional treatment spot shapes beyond a simple square. This is a great step toward tailoring [the] treatment to each individual body region.’ ‘The HIFU modality itself provides the impressive tissue heating capabilities with a single treatment when compared with the often disappointing results seen with multi-treatment, non-heating, cavitational systems that are in widespread use,’ Prof Dr Proebstle continued. ‘Patients love that the Liposonix treatment is easy and

relatively comfortable, with little preparation other than pictures, measurements, and marking. The total in-office time can be less than 2 hours.’

The minimal and reportedly

tolerable discomfort associated with the treatment — without anaesthesia — is accompanied by a complete lack of downtime, according to Dr Mazer. ‘Patients may resume normal activity immediately after the procedure,’ he said.

Optimisation of results Although the Liposonix system is designed for non-invasive body contouring, it is not an alternative to surgery. ‘This addresses the obvious trend in the industry toward less invasive, less risk, less discomfort, and less downtime, but with measurable results patients can see for themselves,’ said Dr Mazer. ‘The Liposonix system is not comparable to surgery but the results are visible, with notable tightening, which is a key component of the overall result. With proper management of expectations, patient satisfaction is very high.’ While some visible results may seem to appear almost immediately, the full outcome manifests within approximately 8–12 weeks. ‘The ideal candidate,’ stated Dr

Rakus, ‘should have a BMI under 30, be otherwise fit and healthy, and pursue a positive, healthy lifestyle in general. Ultimately [the Liposonix treatment] is best for patients with stubborn pockets of fat. The patient needs to be aware of other skin tightening modalities such as Thermage CPT, which in combination could be used to optimise the results pre- or post-treatment.’

Conclusions Dr Rakus is a strong believer in the value and capabilities of the Liposonix system, as well as Solta Medical. ‘This device is superior to market alternatives and is a must- have for aesthetic clinics featuring non-invasive capabilities that wish to offer their patients the best options available,’ she said. ‘No other device can offer the combination of efficacy and flexibility unique to the Liposonix Model 2 system. Also, we can trust Solta Medical’s reputation to stick with and support this technology as well as continue to develop it.’
