COSMECEUTIQOL: A TOOL FOR ASSESSING DERMO-COSMETIC PRODUCTS’ IMPACT ON QUALITY OF LIFE
Taieb C, Rahhali N, Moingeon V, Perez-Cullell N, Sibaud V. J Cosmet Laser Ther 2012; 14(1): 18–23
C ONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: THE objective of assessing Ò quality of lifeÓ is to
take better consideration of the patientsÕ perception of their own state of health by developing specific measurement tools. Paradoxically, there is no questionnaire evaluating the impact of such treatment on womenÕs quality of life. There was, therefore, a need for the creation of the CosmeceutiQoL. Method: The questionnaire was developed using methodology in accordance with international standards in terms of quality of life. Results: The score of the CosmeceutiQoL was correlated to age. The more sensitive the skin is, the lower is the quality of life. For women who declared that their facial skin had started to sag, the quality of life was significantly lower. Deterioration of quality of life was also significantly observed in women who declared that they had age spots on the skin of their face and in women who said that their facial skin was dehydrated. We observed an altered CosmeceutiQoL score in women who declared that they had wrinkles, sagging skin or dark or brown spot. Discussion: The CosmeceutiQoL scale which is essentially based on the womenÕs point of view, is a valid, pertinent, and well accepted tool enabling the assessment of quality of life perceived through the skin. The more CosmeceutiQoL is altered, the more intense the signs of aging on the face, wrinkles, skin sagging, or dark or brown spots are observed, irrespective of the age.

events. Our objective was to compare the changes in potential surrogate markers of CV events in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) during emotional excitement and exercise. Design: Fifty-three enthusiastic ice-hockey spectators with stable CAD attended the Finnish national ice-hockey play-off matches and a maximal bicycle exercise. Plasma catecholamines, endothelin-1, interleukin-6, and markers of platelet activation and blood coagulation were determined before and during the match and before and after the exercise. Results: Plasma endothelin-1 (2.82 ± 0.21 vs. 2.94 ± 0.25 pg/mL, P < 0.0001), noradrenaline (4.38 ± 1.79 vs. 4.77 ± 1.75 nmol/L, P = 0.009) and interleukin-6 (2.04 ± 1.98 vs. 2.90 ± 2.41 pg/mL, P < 0.0001) increased during the match, but markers of platelet activation and coagulation remained unchanged. Endothelin-1 did not change during exercise (2.73 ± 0.17 vs. 2.72 ± 0.19 pg/mL, P = 0.593) but noradrenaline (2.70 ± 1.08 vs. 10.6 ± 5.5 nmol/L), adrenaline (0.23 ± 0.13 vs. 0.52 ± 0.37 nmol/L), interleukin-6 (1.77 ± 1.59 vs. 2.43 ± 1.78 pg/mL) and markers of platelet activation and blood coagulation increased significantly (P < 0.0001 for all). Conclusions: The responses of surrogate markers of acute CV events to emotional excitement and physical exercise are partly

patients with increased sebum secretion. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of 5% spironolactone gel in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Methods: This study was a double-blind clinical trial, performed randomly in two demographically equivalent groups. In this study, 78 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris participated. The patients, as groups of cases (38 patients) and controls (40 patients), took 5% spironolactone gel and placebo, respectively. The response to treatment was evaluated by the total acne lesions (TLC) and acne severity index (ASI). Results: The mean age of the case patients was 21.5 ± 4.2 years and of the control patients was 22.2 ± 4.06 years. The difference in TLC was statistically significant between the two groups (P = 0.007), but no statistically significant difference was seen between the two groups for ASI (P = 0.052). Conclusion: The

different. Emotional excitement causes concomitant increases in markers reflecting vulnerability to atherosclerotic plaque complications while physical exercise causes more prominent changes in markers of coagulation.
