Christchurch heading back
BY LAURA GELDER Christchurch is bouncing back from the
earthquake which devastated the capital of New Zealand’s South Island last year. A new Lonely Planet guide, one of the
first guide books on the city to be written since the disaster, says that Christchurch is re-emerging as one of New Zealand’s most exciting cities. The SoMo neighbourhood is lauded as
a dynamic area and a hub for live entertainment. Here, the Iconic Court Theatre has relocated to a restored warehouse and popular spots are the Addington Coffee Co-op and Simo’s Deli, serving North African street food. The Cashel Mall Restart project is using
60 shipping containers to house an eclectic collection of shops and cafés and revitalise retail in the CBD and there are even plans to build a cardboard cathedral. Next month the central 171-room Rendezvous Hotel Christchurch re-opens followed by a 155-room Ibis Hotel in September, and a Novotel at the end of the year. Construction is now underway on the all new Latimer Hotel and another four major hotel re-openings are slated for 2013.

Uganda has vision for an eco-tourism future
Uganda's president was in London last
month to launch an initiative for 'sustainable tourism development'. The Presidential Initiative for Sustainable Tourism (PRESTO) was held in London in recognition of the fact that UK tourists head to the East African country in greater numbers than any other country bar Germany. The president emphasised Uganda's unique and rich ecological and cultural resources, and stressed that the country is one of the most bio-diverse in the
world, with around 18,783 species of flora and fauna. Top tourist spots include Mount
Rwenzori for its hiking, Virunga Volcano, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, famous for its mountain gorillas, Murchison Falls, one of the top10 birding sites in Africa, and the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, in Queen Elisabeth National Park. Tour operators featuring Uganda include Rainbow Tours and Cedarberg African Travel.
