FEATURE HONG KONG AND MACAU

Hong Kong is still booming. Visitor spend has actually gone up over the last couple of years too. There’ll be a lot of trade activity again – we’ve got our ‘Contact & Contract’ event coming up this month and the PATA Exchange the following week. And with the cruise terminal becoming operational in 2013, we’ll be focusing more on the cruise market towards the end of the year.”

From the Front Line KATRIN RUMMER

Product & Purchasing Manager, Travel 2 “The magic of Hong Kong

is its East meets West vibe – which really appeals to clients. We have a number of great deals and offers at the Excelsior Hotel and also offer a few tours to Macau for clients. The most popular is the day tour but there’s also a two-day package.”

MELISSA TILLING Product Development Director, Funway Far East “Thanks to a very

proactive approach to airfares, sustained by Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong has remained a key hub. I think it’s also been helped by rising prices in Singapore. We’ve had 10 to 15% growth in Macau – it’s more and more in the news, and they really have got some incredible state-of-the-art shows now.”

JONATHAN DITTE Product Manager, Jetset “Hong Kong is still performing strongly as a

stopover destination with everything from three-star standard to five-star deluxe selling well. The trips we are selling tend to be the traditional transfer, city tour and accommodation packages, which have been popular for several years.”

TONY FOWELL Proprietor, Freeway Travel “Clients who go to Hong Kong enjoy it because of

the shopping, the views and the fact that you can get through to other parts of China. We tend to get a lot of clients in their 50s and 60s, who like the culture, the historical interest and the hustle and bustle of the markets.”

From top: food is a major component of a trip to Hong Kong and Macau; it is possible to get 'away from it all' in Hong Kong; Chinese traditions and tranquillity are all part of the Macau experience

Room Report Several properties opened in Hong Kong in 2011 – including a 100-floors- up Ritz Carlton – although the recently-unveiled Hotel Icon is in many ways just as notable. Designed by leading architects including Terence Conran, the swish property doubles as an educational project staffed by hospitality students. Don’t expect anything less than a quality hotel though – it’s drawn rave reviews. In Macau luxury lovers should check

out the new Banyan Tree Macau, a five-star all-suite resort that forms part of the Galaxy Macau complex. There are private indoor relaxation pools inside all suites. There’s also an extensive spa.
