FEATURE ARGENTINA AND CHILE

What's New Explore Tailormade has expanded the number of countries it offers to 21, with Chile and Argentina among the additions. Journey Latin America has added a

new self-drive itinerary of Chile’s famous Austral Road, a remote, scenic route through a range of rugged landscapes. The spectacularly set Hotel Salto Chico, an Explora property, recently reopened after two months of closure due to forest fires in the Torres del Paine National Park. It now offers an extra 11 exploration activities in addition to the 35 already featured. New in Patagonia for the 2011/12 summer season were the Singular Hotel and Tierra Patagonia. The 57-room Singular is set within a historic cold storage plant while the 40-room Tierra Patagonia – sister property to Tiarra Atacama, in northern Chile – sits on the shores of Lake Sarmiento. The Antumalal Hotel, with its lake-

side setting in Pucón, has added a spa. New in Santiago are the 14-room Lastarria boutique hotel – set in a building dating from the 1920s – and the

Noi Vitacura hotel in the trendy Alonso de Cordova neighbourhood. The latter has 72 rooms, 15 suites, a spa and a terrace with views across the city. The Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa

on Easter Island has opened its doors for business, with the whole project scheduled for completion by August.

Tourism Talk

ODILE PALUSTRAN Europe Regional Manager Turismo Chile “The UK market has

dropped off in the last four years so in order to reverse this trend we have implemented a new strategy, with a goal of welcoming 60,000 UK visitors in 2014. “In 2011 the UK was named a priority

market for the very first time – it is perceived to have real potential. We are interested in addressing the travel trade and building a strong, mutually beneficial relationship with the market. We are planning consumer campaigns with different tour operators, plus training events and fam trips. An online training programme is still on standby.”
