Children’s mags fly flag for print media in latest ABCs

While other sectors see circulation falls, the kids’ press is holding its own… by Samantha Loveday

MOSHI MONSTERS, Peppa Pig and Disney properties have continued to ensure the children’s magazine market has somewhat escaped the circulation falls seen in other entertainment industries in the latest round of ABCs. In fact, Egmont, Redan, Immediate Media, DC Thomson and Skyjack all enjoyed growth with key titles for the July to December 2011 period. In comparison, all but two of the specialist video games magazines available saw their audience fall by more than a tenth (source: MCV), and two magazines lost more than a quarter of their readerships in the last 12 months, with their circulations dropping to less than 10,000.

Skyjack Publishing’s Moshi Monsters Magazine, meanwhile, continues to be the best selling children’s title in the UK. The publication saw a 43 per cent growth to 162,838.

Egmont saw its girls’ portfolio, Disney titles and We Love Pop perform well, with Barbie, Go Girl, Disney Princess and Tinkerbell all enjoying period on period growth.

Immediate Media’s pre-school portfolio was up 24.1 per cent year on year, while Redan Publishing’s Fun to Learn Peppa Pig notched up average sales of 76,834 copies (an increase of 18 per cent YOY). Finally, DC Thomson’s Animals & You recorded an eight per cent growth YOY, while the Official Jacqueline Wilson Mag was up 10.8 per cent YOY.

Hallmark grows Disney Story Book line

CARD AND gift specialist Hallmark has added three new Disney titles to its range of recordable story books. A good extension for toy retailers looking to increase their offering into complementary categories, the story books use the latest technology to capture and record the reader’s voice, so every time the page is turned they can be heard narrating the tale. In addition, the new stories also feature music playing on every page. The new titles include Winnie the

Pooh’s Plan Bee; What Makes a Princess?; and Lightning McQueen and His Winning Team.

“We’re really excited to be adding some of our favourite Disney characters to the recordable story book range,” commented Victoria Greenfield, innovation manager at Hallmark Cards. “Our previous releases have proven to be a real success. Disney is just one

of the many popular brands we offer to our customers and by adding some of its most cherished characters to our range of recordable story books, we are giving families even more reasons to connect and share in the precious activity of reading together.” Hallmark Cards: 01274 252000
