Got a wedding planning question?

Ask Kelly on WedTown!

I want to use paper lanterns at our wedding but I’m not sure if it’s appropriate for a wedding. I love the lantern look. What do you think about paper lanterns?

~ Amanda in Tennessee

Amanda, if you love the look of paper lanterns then you should consider using them — it is your wedding! However, sometimes plain, round paper lanterns look a little casual for a wedding. Here are few tips for incorporating paper lanterns into your wedding design:

 Look for different shapes —oval, square, honeycombe and cocoon are just a few shapes you might want to look at.

 Use soft colors for a more romantic look. Or bold tones that coordinate with your color story. Try to avoid primary colors that might look too “birthday party.”

 You can even find lanterns with elegant designs or with cut-outs to add some interest.

Whatever you decide, try to select a more elegant style because it is your big day! {See WED’s lantern pin board}

I don’t know where to start in choosing our wedding colors. What are the hot trends? How do I decide?

~ Kaitlin in Florida

Kaitlin, although it’s great to look at trends in color, choosing your wedding colors is a more personal decision and should take into account a few key factors.

 First thing to consider are your favorite colors. Think about what appeals to you. A great place to start is ThePerfectPalette.com. We love this site for finding the perfect color combinations and décor inspiration.

 Next, be sure to look at the colors in your reception space. Many are neutral and any color scheme will work. But sometimes there are strong colors in the space and you’ll want to avoid clashing colors.

 Last, take a look at current color trends. Pantone has called “Tangerine Tango” the color of the year for 2012. We’ve also been seeing great all white weddings, black and white, and navy used as a neutral with a pop of color like yellow (or tangerine tango).
