nail training

Kitting yourself out with the essentials is the key to nail training success.

When it comes tomaking your salon stand out fromthe rest, it's important that you offer your clients a diverse and interesting range of nail treatments.

As a professional therapists youmay already be qualified to offer natural nail manicures and pedicures, and adding an enhancement systemto your skills will help drive your business.

Alternatively youmay have specialised in skin care since qualifying from college, and feel it's time to embrace nail treatments to bring additional business to your salon.

What'smore, in these times of employment uncertainty, adding an extra talent to your CVwill only be a bonus.

Keep your clients

By nature we're creatures of habit, and it'smuch easier for a client to enjoy all of her treatments at one salon, rather than having to book separate appointments at various salons and Spas in her area. But if you're not offering a comprehensive range of nail treatments, then it's likely your client will look elsewhere.

Experiencing training in a nail technique that's new to you or that you've simply not practiced for some time will be a great bonus. As will being able to offer treatments fromdifferent brands; you should have a professional knowledge of every product you work

with and have attended at least basic or conversion training so that you understand how the products work.

Not all products behave the same and eachmay require a different technique, for example you should not assume that because you work with one brand of Gel that another will level the same or have the same curing point.

"As a professional you should love what you do and be interested in your clients welfare, learning the latestmost up-to- date techniques and recognise that you must continue to learn and keep your staff up-to-date. Every successful business depends on an active training programme," says René Lipsitz,MD of Bio Sculpture UK.

"No business will survive long without a training and development plan. It is as vital as watering and feeding the plants to enable themnot just to survive, but also to grow. Nomatter how experienced you are you're never too old to learn," she adds.

Do your research into what nail treatments are new to themarket or that you don't currently offer and then consider whether they would be suitable for your clientele, or the clients you are looking to attract to your business. Read the trade publications, like Guild News and The Nail File, and search the Internet to see what's launching. Take a look at the glossies to see which treatments aremaking a buzz on the high street - these are the sorts of therapies you should think about training in so that you don't get left behind.

When choosing where to train, you should choose somewhere you feel comfortable and has all of the facilities you need. Heidi Silvester, senior tutor at the Oxford International College of Beauty, advises: "Agood training provider should have excellent facilities, highly qualified, skilled staff and a professional attitude to beauty therapy. Those of us in the industry know that this profession is hard work and requires skill, knowledge and hard work. Training providers should set an example for their students to follow so that that aimhigh and reach the highest professional standards when the join the industry.
