who wish to network with other technicians, all while sharing a great meal. Tis year there were a total of 21 MECP Master Installation Technicians in attendance at the dinner, nearly 10 percent of the Master certified population currently. In addition, several Honorary MECP Masters and industry colleagues also attended, such as 2011 Installer of the Year Jon Webb. Like last year, MECP was pleased to offer giveaway items from tool partners Bojo Tools and Innova Diagnostics. Tese companies
graciously offered some great technician tool products to be given away to lucky winners at the MECP Master dinner. Tere were six winners of different Bojo pry tool kits. Tese kits all came with a nice storage pouch that make taking them all into the car a breeze so you’ll always have just the right pry tool at hand.
THERE WERE THREE WINNERS OF THE INNOVA DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS: • Nelson Hays of Bobwires Audio (Alaska) — Innova 3340 Automotive DMM • Jon Kowanetz of Handcrafted Car Audio (Arizona) — Innova 3150 CAN OBD-II & ABS Scan Tool • Brittney Parker of Best Buy (South Carolina) — Innova 3160 CAN OBD-II, ABS & SRS Scan Tool
Of course the group hung out well after the dinner was over at the MECP and NAVTV hospitality suite. Their conversation included
a lot of shop talk and sharing of ideas to improve and promote the job of installation technician as well as MECP credentials. On hand were some of the popular portable oscilloscopes that offered the Masters a chance to test various audio, video and data bus signals.
MECP MASTER JOINS THE CEA AUTOMOTIVE BOARD Te CEA Automotive Electronics Division Board recently elected retailer and MECP Master Installation Technician Derek Pace of
Certified Sounds in Wailuku, HI, as a representative of the independent specialist. Derek’s participation will provide the AED Board insights into the installation technician challenges with products and vehicles, as well as provide a point of view from a single-store specialist retailer that manufacturers want to hear. Te AED Board is largely comprised of industry manufacturers and suppliers along with larger retailers like Best Buy and Crutchfield, so Derek’s voice for the “in the trenches” installation technicians and independent shop owners is a valued addition to balance the representation.
MECP PODCAST INTERVIEWS Another way MECP has been reaching out to other technicians is through the MECP Master Podcast Interview series. Troughout
the past couple of months, MECP has been conducting short, one-on-one interviews with MECP Master Installation Technicians to allow other technicians to hear what’s inspired these Masters to achieve and maintain MECP Master certification. You may be sur- prised, even inspired, to boost your knowledge and credentials. Check out the interviews on the MECP website at
www.MECP.com.
DON’T FORGET ADVANCED LEVEL CHANGES! Becoming MECP Master certified first requires a valid (current) Advanced level certification. MECP is revising both the Advanced
level study guide and exam for 2012, so be sure to check the MECP website for the latest details of deployment dates of the guide and exam, as well as when the current version of the Advanced exam is set to retire. As with everything in the industry, MECP continues to evolve with the changes in automotive technology and aftermarket electronics.
