New York Subways & Stations 1970-1990 by Tod Lange is available now from Schiffer Publishing. Through over 150 large color photos, this beefy book portrays nearly every corner of the city’s subway and elevat- ed transit system in perhaps the grittiest, grimiest, and most heavily graffitied period of its existence (and the city’s). While the odd piece of clean or new equipment occa- sionally appears, the squalor seems relent- less, and you’d think the sun never shone bright and clear in the Big Apple back then. The images are quite compelling, as track- less viaducts wander away from former junctions, debris is liberally scattered along the right of way, and pervasive graffiti adorns everything that didn’t move, along with most of what did. The “captions” usual- ly provide no more information than the lo- cation and year. It’s also not clear who shot the pictures; photographers Bill Myers and Bill Pollman are briefly profiled, but the in- dividual photos are not attributed. The book’s bold layout suits the material well, and though the equipment and scenes are not often described, die-hard New York transit fans will revel in the images, shot on Kodachrome long before digital cameras and mayor Rudy Guiliani’s reign of iron that cleaned up the city. The vast majority of the rolling stock pictured here has been scrapped or converted to marine wildlife habitat at the bottom of the Atlantic. high speed railroading touches on the high points beginning with Britain’s Stirling Sin- gle 4-2-2 of 1875 through New York Cen- tral’s Empire State Express and the record- setting speed run of NYC 4-4-0 No. 999. A discussion follows on how innovations in steam locomotive design crossed the At- lantic in both directions, and Germany’s un- veiling of the first articulated, diesel-electric trainset in 1932.
