American Steam Railroad

ACQUIRES FRISCO MIKE: American Steam Railroad Preservation of Columbus, Ohio, has acquired St. Louis-San Francisco Mikado No. 1352, which the group intends to restore to op- eration. Rebuilt by the railroad in 1944 from a 1912 Alco 2-8-0, the locomotive was retired in 1956 and put on display at Swope Park in Kansas City, Mo. Since then it has passed be- tween several owners before ending up at its current location in Taylorville, Ill. ASR is rais- ing funds to move the 2-8-2 to a restoration site in Ohio while smaller components, such as the power reverse, are being rehabilitated.

It was to have been joined by No. 518 painted in IC chocolate and orange, but the unit had not been released from National Railway Equipment’s Silvis shop in time to make the trip. The special retraced its route back to Chicago on January 23. The con-

sist would later make brunch and dinner train runs out of Chicago Union Station on February 17-19 over Canadian Pacific rails to Sturtevant, Wis.


FIVE-YEAR PLAN RELEASED: In January Amtrak released its Five-Year Financial Plan for fiscal years 2012-2016. The document did- n’t contain many surprises, but it did claim that the railroad expects to fund 87 per cent of its operating needs from revenue in the next five years. Fares (“Passenger Related Rev- enue”) will account for 73 per cent, income from operating commuter systems (in Mary- land, Connecticut, and California) will bring in three per cent, “reimbursable” and “other” will represent 11 per cent, leaving a 13 per cent federal operating subsidy.

The report reiterates the company’s plans to

acquire 40 business class cars and add two to each six-car Acela high speed trainset, increas- ing the capacity of each consist by 130 seats in that profitable market. This will require up- grades to the Acela maintenance facilities in Washington, New York, and Boston. The rail- road also expects to have in service all 130 of the new single-level long distance Viewliner II cars being built by CAF USA in Elmira, N.Y., by the end of 2014. The plan says that in FY 2016, the Acela

will make $63.64 profit per rider, up from $57.78 in 2012. Other routes expected to be “profitable” in FY2012 include the NEC Re-
