Volunteers from the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum worked with the owners of Empire- Becks Recycling to save this former Lehigh Valley caboose. HOW OFTEN HAVE WE HEARD the sad stories of historic pieces of railroad equip- ment that are lost to the scrapper’s torch? Be it a failure to act, or a simple missed oppor- tunity, so many examples are lost each year despite the best efforts of groups around the country. Many obstacles stand in the way of rescue, from high scrap prices, to exorbitant moving costs, to a simple lack of organiza- tion


and funding. Anyone involved in


preservation knows the three fundamental ingredients for success are time, people, and money (mostly money). The volunteers at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad


Museum (R&GVRRM) in Rush, N.Y., are no strangers to this concept. Rochester was once served by five major railroads (New York Central; Lehigh Valley; Erie; Balti- more & Ohio; and the Pennsylvania), and we have worked hard to include significant examples from each line that served the area. Since resources are tight, we examine each potential acquisition carefully before committing. Sometimes the best opportuni- ties are those we don’t even know about yet. In September 2011, our museum was sud- denly presented with an opportunity to ac- quire a steel-bodied Lehigh Valley “North-
