LIKE any other association, ITM’s continuing challenge is to reinforce value to members, who are part of a network of over 1,500 business travel and meetings professionals dedicated to networking, knowledge, education and more. We know that being part of a professional organisation is beneficial for all of our professional development and the future of our careers. The connections we make, the resources, ideas and advice available represent an outstanding return on what amounts to a modest, manageable investment of time, money and effort. But what part do associations

play in a world where information and networks are everywhere without cost? I recognise that professionals

have a choice, whereas in the past the only way to garner information and create networks was through the face-to-face activity of an association. That’s why I am so pleased that last year we introduced ITM Connect membership to give professionals the opportunity to connect to the leading UK business travel and meetings, buyer- led association at no cost. This way, professionals can get a taste of what makes an association different. Through Connect, we have linked

up to nearly 900 new business travel and meetings professionals who want to be part of ITM. Connect members receive access to news updates plus elements of networking and knowledge services through both ITM and the European arm of the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA Europe). Full ITM members receive much more, of course, and many of you

will have seen some of our advocacy work over the last year on behalf of those members. Engaging with airlines and legislative bodies is a key, hidden part of the important work that only an association can do. And this work results in real change for the industry. We recently asked our members

“Engaging with airlines and legislative bodies is a key, hidden part of the important work that only an association can do”

what topics they would like to hear about in our 2012 conference and we have taken this into account, but on some occasions we need to tell people what they don’t know and need to know. Sessions on industry affairs issues which will highlight data abuse, competition and contracting issues, transparency issues and security gaps are vitally important if you are serious about pro- fessional business travel. And practical support on managing your programme in a time of crisis is something we all need when we know that 2012 is likely to hold some surprises in store. Combine this with case studies from buyers who have changed their programmes and it becomes obvious why an association is needed in the 21st century. No other type

of organisation encourages so many people to get involved, to work together to common goals, and to open up their businesses

and let us take a peek inside for the benefit of everyone.
