THE MEETING PLACE

MEETINGS planners are leaving it late for events this summer, but business is still set to boom. They're among the messages garnered from exhibitors at February's UK Venue Show taking place at London Olympia. Robin Parker, general manager at Church House Conference Centre says, “There are potentially many opportunities for 2012, but the fact that some buyers are leaving it so late would suggest that they are going to be looking for value, and will not accept inflated rates.” Wendy Greenhalgh, director of

sales and marketing at One Great George Street, in Westminster, commented, “There are many great last minute, unexpected and ‘one off’ opportunities to play host to product launches, hospitality events and high profile meetings in the first half of the year until the full extent of transport disruption can be seen and felt.

➔ Slow start to Olympic summer SPLASHING OUT ON THE STRAND

“The challenge will be quoting

the right price to get the business, coping with transport disruption, recovering and then activity to gain business in the post-Olympic Games period,” she adds. Tanya Cohen, exhibition director

of the UK Venue Show, believes the first half of the year will revolve

around the Olympics, not just in London, but across the country. “The challenge for the venues

will be to get the balance right between price and offering and, when the Games are over, to work closely with new and existing clients to get them through to the new year,“ she says.

LONDON'S Strand Palace Hotel has completed a multimillion pound refurbishment to offer 11 new meeting rooms, equipped with high-speed wifi, touch panel lighting controls and the latest AV technology. Nine of the rooms are located on the lower ground floor, accessed via a grand Art Deco staircase. The Exeter Suite is the largest of the spaces and can host receptions for up to 200 guests, theatre- style events for up to 180, and dinners for up to 140. Day delegate rates start from

£49 per person (including VAT) which covers room hire, refreshments, restaurant buffet lunch, LCD projector, screen and flip chart, conference stationery and water.
