World War II saw an end to both lines. When manufacturing resumed, green plastic HO New Haven cars were sold in a set as add-ons. They departed after 1950, the Korean War having in- tervened. Not so in S. They were green and red plastic, and flat silver or plated for the Silver Bullet set, and yellow as a circus car. Some were lettered New Haven, while others were American Flyer Lines. The operating mail car re- turned. One car became a commuter coach with passengers entering one end and departing the other and down into the Guilford Station underpass. Of the tinplate man- ufacturers, only American Flyer added remote control action to its passenger cars, giving joy to many children be- yond freight cars which received and unloaded different commodities. Is it any wonder then, with this pop- ularity and the massive numbers of New Haven cars produced by American Flyer, they would in time be called “American Flyer cars.” I did see one in an outdoor train museum, and it showed some signs of rust after 50 years from initial manufacture–pretty good for an innovative design with a


long history, though Teague is long for- gotten by most for his contribution. On a personal note, this month marks 30 years of writing COLLECTOR CONSIST. It’s something I never expected. Many readers have written to say it is the first thing they turn to when they get the magazine. Readers, however, make COL- LECTOR CONSIST possible. Over the years they have mailed in old catalogs, think- ing them possibly of some value to the column rather than trashing them. They have indeed been valuable. Without this kind and thoughtful support, COLLECTOR CONSIST would have been a lot poorer. Thanks to all the people who make and have made this possible.
