Painting and detailing an N scale GP30 for the CB&Q

The inside of the locomotive cab was brush-painted gray (above). The plastic window inserts were removed from the cab (top right) and the window glazing on the engineer’s side was cut away so the figure could appear by an open window (above right). Here is

in the JnJ diesel detail set. Note the two sizes, the larger one for the door win- dows and cab, and the shorter one for the main windscreen. Here I used a cut- ting board, a set of Model Master Micro Shear Photo Etch Trimmers,

the finished model, painted, detailed and ready for service (below and right). To give it that new look, the model was weathered only slightly. Look closely and you may be able to spot the speed recorder cable on the lead truck on the engineer’s side of the loco.

tweezers and thick cyanoacrylate ce- ment. You can use a No. 11 blade to free the parts, but be careful, as you can bend them. The No. 80 holes for the wipers (with the exception noted below) had been drilled earlier.

With the long blades cut and cleaned up with a file, pick up the part with a tweezers and dip the end into a small pool of thick cyanoacrylate, then place it home. The thick glue will hold better because it will fill any gaps in the hole.
