GE No. 45 is a side rod 45-tonner which shares switching duties with No. 44. It hooks up with a covered hopper by the cold stor- age plant (left) and slowly moves forward. Note the horizontal “8” on the side of the lo- comotive. This is the symbol for infinity and the logo for the railroad. While watching No. 45 switch cars, the author later managed a telephoto shot (below)of the front end.


Infinity Railway. Not only will the rail- road be showing off its new station and railroad headquarters, but an excur- sion is promised, as well. I followed the other passengers up


the stairway to the street-level depot. The station’s interior created a sensory overload: white marble everywhere. The Art Deco structure made an ele- gant statement for the U&I Railway, its large neon sign, “The Infinity Route,” adorning the roof and beckon- ing the local citizens. A representative of the Chamber of Commerce handed us a brochure enti- tled A Visitor’s Guide to Historic Thomasburg, and we perused it as we waited for our baggage. perous city in middle America between the country’s two major mountain ranges and at the head of navigation of the Katherine River (a tributary of the Mississippi). It is the headquarters of the Utopia & Infinity Railway, which runs from connections with the U.S. rail network at Utopia to Infinity. Though an industrial city, Thomasburg benefits from clean hydroelectric power from the damming of the river, and the U&I op- 41
