The side and rear walls are common to both structure kits and the side walls can be reversed for variety on either structure. One of the side walls has two bricked-in windows on the first floor. This is a great detail which again im- plies changes to the structure over time. The molded brick detail is rich and
deep enough for a wash to hold and ac- cent the brick pattern. Yes, there is ac- tually a pattern on the bricks, the com- mon American Bond style where every sixth row of bricks is on end. This is a small but very thoughtful detail, it gives a sense of turn-of-the-century pe- riod to the building itself. One final de- tail of note on all the walls are the in- side parapet brick details, an item often left off of retail/apartment kits of this nature. There is also a raised nar- row trim section along the bottom of these parapet bricks where the roof casting slips into place. This raised trim appears to model roof flashing. Once the walls are removed from the
sprue, little flash remains to be re- moved. I paint and finish all walls of any structure prior to assembly. As this was a “modernized” building, I de-
cided to paint the bricks a medium gray using Polly Scale D&H Gray. When a structure was modernized of- tentimes the bricks were painted to further the modernized appearance. The sills, lintels and upper trim on the front parapet were painted BAR Gray. A wash of Grimy Black and alcohol ac- cented the mortar in the walls, and when that dried, I lightly sanded the walls with 600-grit sandpaper to even out any mottled looked from the wash. I sprayed the window castings a medi- um green, a typical and appropriate window color, and when dry, the win- dow and rear door castings were ce- mented in place. I painted the inside parapet bricks Polly Scale Zinc Oxide, a good brick color, and applied a wash of Aged Concrete for mortar detail. I followed the City Classics photo on
the packaging as a guide for painting the front panels. I didn’t have the light green in the photo on hand, but I did have a spray can of Testors Modelmas- ter “Desert Tan,” a good substitute and a color which would compliment the green signs. After masking the upper brick wall a few light spray coats of the
