The EMD SD40-2W is a 3,000 horsepower (2,240 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division. The Canadian National railway acquired 123 of the SD40-2W locomotives, numbered 5241-5363. The prototype locomotive was equipped with a 16-cylinder diesel prime mover, and rode on 3-axle trucks, with all six axles powered. The Intermountain Railway Co. model has been manufactured with numerous distinct details of the prototype.
