About the Installer Buggeln Brothers was established in 1921 by Wayne

Buggeln’s grandfather, R.P. Buggeln, and his great-uncle, G.W. They originated as a boiler business that also did copper and tinning, soldering gutters onto rooftops. After returning from the Korean War, Wayne’s Father, Clifford, joined the ranks and eventually Wayne did as well,

Field Report Utica Boilers SSC

he Utica Boilers Facebook page recently featured a Utica SSC installation submitted by Wayne Buggeln of Buggeln Brothers, Inc., in West

Wayne Buggeln, third-generation owner of Buggeln Brothers, Inc., based in West Caldwell, N.J.

About the Installation

• Location: Short Hills, N.J. • Application Type: Residential — 80-year-old

Colonial home • Objective: Replace home’s original boiler and

convert to gas to maximize fuel efficiency. (The original converted coal boiler, an antiquated hot water gravity system took up approx. 100 sq. ft. of space and had become very expensive to operate.) • BTUs required: Wayne did a heat loss and sizing

calculation and determined the Utica SSC-150 was “a perfect match.” • Key Selling Point for Homeowner: 96% AFUE and

modulation. High fuel costs motivated them to replace their existing system. According to Wayne, the homeowner told him their “old burner never shut off.” • Result: Wayne recently spoke with the homeowners

and was told that “with the new Utica SSC, this is the first time the house has actually been comfortable.” Wayne says “with the wall mount boiler, the homeowners are amazed with the space they’ve reclaimed.” • Special Considerations: Both Wayne and the

homeowners realize that the hot water heater currently installed has probably another 24 months of life left in it. Wayne piped the install so that it would be easy to slip in a new indirect unit such as the new

Stainless Steel Condensing Boiler

starting in 1974 after growing up in the business, and picking up the trade over the summers during high school and college. Buggeln Brothers has been installing Utica Boilers since

the 1920s. In addition to Utica, Wayne also sells Pennco and, on occasion, some other brands. Wayne sums up what he likes about Utica in one word

— “Dependable.” He says, “The Utica name means something, and people recognize it.” With all the new condensing boilers on the market he knew the new SSC condensing boiler would have Utica dependability. Wayne first encountered the Utica

SSC condensing boiler at a Counter Day held at Wallington Plumbing Supply in Fairfield, N.J., and credits Buggeln’s success with the Utica brand to Wallington for their outstanding support as his local Utica wholesaler. Wayne wanted to learn more so he visited the factory in Utica, N.Y. and took the four hour Utica SSC training session, where he had an opportunity to actually see how the product is made. Wayne’s take away on the Utica

SSC was that it was “Simple, and easy to understand with Utica dependability.”
