Focus on The Rubric Says The thesis statement is concise and clear.

Writing Strategy Do research and take notes about a cause-effect relationship in nature.

Living near mountains can teach you a thing or two about high altitudes. There’s less oxygen high up and you need to ascend a mountain gradually to allow your body to adjust. But what, exactly, can happen? To fi nd the answer, I looked at science texts and websites that I knew were reliable and appropriate. I found three specifi c effects of altitude on humans. Here are my notes.

1. high altitude pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs) • tightness in the chest, feeling of suffocation, cough • skin may turn colors, thinking becomes unclear, may even die • go down, seek medical help

2. high altitude cerebral edema (brain tissue swells, fluid leaks)

• loss of coordination, confused mental functions, could lead to death

• could happen after about a week at high altitude • go down right away, get treatment

3. acute mountain sickness (pretty common) • generally get it over 10,000 feet

• headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, sometimes nausea • usually feel better when adjusted to level of altitude
