Conflict Resolution: Solving Conflicts With ABC
Not only will this ABC method help your students resolve conflicts in their lives, it will also provide them with a framework for analyzing conflicts in the literature they read, an important step in develop- ing critical thinking and reasoning.
1. Present the ABC Problem-Solving Method on a Poster or on the Chalkboard
Ask,
What is the problem?
Brainstorm different ways to solve the problem.
Choose the best way to solve the problem.
2. Explain the Three Steps • ASK, What is the problem?
Asking what the problem is helps define it for everyone. People with different points of view see the same problem in different ways. Defining the problem is the first step to finding a good way to solve it.

Vocabulary Strategy: Unlocking Word Meanings
Teach and explain each step in the Vocabulary Strategy. Use concrete exam- ples to model this process with a small group or the whole class on a regular basis.
When You Come to a Word You Don’t Know:
• Look at the word: Say the word out loud. Does the word look like one you have seen or heard before? If so, think about when you heard it and where you were. Does this give you a clue about the word’s meaning?
A Comprehensive Literacy and Character Development Program
A Comprehension Page for Differentiated Instruction of Every Collection Selection:
• Look around the word: Retell— in your own words—what the para- graph with the unknown word is about. Does this give you any clues about the word’s meaning? What do you think the word might mean? Reread the paragraph to see if your idea makes sense.
• Below Level • On Level • Above Level
• Look in the word: Can you break the word into smaller parts? For example, sandbox breaks into sand and box. Sadness breaks into sad and -ness. Do you know the meaning of any of the small parts? Does this help you with the meaning of the whole word?
• Look up the word: If you still don’t know the word, decide if it’s a word that you need in order to understand what you are reading. If it is, look up the word in the dic- tionary, or ask for help.
A Comprehension Page for Differentiated Instruction of Every Collection Selection:
