Oral Language Introduce the Read-Aloud Vocabulary

Theme Words free peace wish(ing)

Content Words different world language

Build on Experience Remind children that peace means getting along with others. Explain that the book you are going to read tells about many other things that peace is, such as giving a hug to a friend. Remind children that the Word of the Day is hug. Have them give themselves a hug.

Use children’s experiences to build background. Ask questions such as:

READ-ALOUD BOOK

• What is peace? Is peace sharing? Is peace helping someone? Let’s read more about what peace is.

Refer to TEACHING ROUTINE CARD 17 for more information on introducing books.

Introduce Vocabulary Present Theme Words Use these prompts to develop meaning:

• Is peace more like sunshine or a loud thunderstorm?

Features authentic multicultural literature to build background knowledge and connect children to the world of reading.

ELL Support

Invite children to say each Theme and Content Word after you. Pronounce each word slowly. Show an appropriate object or act out the meaning of the word to promote understanding. For additional ELL strategies, see TEACHING ROUTINE CARDS 34–37.

• Is a bird flying in the sky free? Yes, it is free. Is a bird in a cage free? No, a bird in a cage is not free.

• Have you ever made a wish? What did you wish for?

Present Content Words Use the Read-Aloud to present the words. Be deliberate in using the words and their meanings in context.

• Look at these different faces. How are the faces different?

• This is Earth. We call Earth our world. What are some things in our world?

• When we speak, we use words that other people understand. The words are part of our language. There are many different languages in the world. What language do you speak?
