HANDWRITING Grades PreK–6 Multisensory Manipulatives

Fine Motor Skills Development Kit Grades K–2

! !

CHOKING HAZARD. Not for under 3 yrs.* WARNING: Contains Functional Sharp Edge.

Promote fine motor skills essential for handwriting with the Zaner-Bloser Fine Motor Skills Development Kit. The kit** includes a Teacher Guide by Mary Benbow, occupational therapist, and the following manipulatives:

Activities to refine wrist/thumb development

String the Straw Materials: yard of plastic string

✔ clear plastic drinking straw

Procedure: Have the student hold the drinking straw in his recessive, or non-pre- ferred, hand and use the thumb and forefinger of his preferred hand to feed the plastic string into one end of the drinking straw until the string is completely pushed into the straw.

String the Snake Materials: lacing shape snake with dice

Procedure: Place the beads near the student’s non-preferred hand. Have the student hold a bead in his non-preferred or recessive hand and hold the end of the shoestring with the preferred hand. Ask the student to “poke” the end of the shoestring through the bead with his preferred hand using thumb and finger movements only (no wrist or arm movements). Grasp the tip of the shoestring with the non-preferred hand, and guide the bead with thumb and finger movements of the preferred hand along the string. Repeat until all the beads are on the shoestring.

You can expand on this activity by incorporating the shape dice. Have the student roll the dice to select a shape, and then ask them to lace the beads together to form different patterns. Students practice their shapes, while rolling the dice allows them to refine the transverse arches of the hands (see page 21).

This activity will benefit students only if it is done correctly. Watch for students who place the bead over the tip of the string rather than inserting the tip through the bead.
