3. Slant

In legible writing, all letters slant (or lean) the same way. This gives a consistent, neat appearance that is pleasing to the eye. Manuscript writing has a slant of 90°. That means it is vertical, or straight up and down.

Manuscript Paper Position

The secret to vertical writing is the position of the paper on the desk. Position the paper as shown. Then pull strokes in the direction indicated by the arrow.

4. Spacing

In legible writing, spaces between letters, words, and sentences are consistent. This gives a neat appearance that is pleasing to the eye.

Between Letters: Letters should not be too close together or too far apart. Trust your eye to judge space between manuscript letters.

Between Words: Leave space for a lowercase o (the same size as a paper clip or the tip of your pinky finger) between words.

Between Sentences: Leave space for oo between sentences.
