LS: Hi girls. First of all, remind us of the names behind the group and how it all started… Marcella: We are Marcella Puppini,
Kate Mullins and Stephanie O’ Brien. I, Marcella, started the band in 2004. The concept of the band was based on a modern take on the sister harmony groups of the 30s and 40s, which is also why we called ourselves Puppini Sisters All three of us studied on the same Jazz course, and we have a strong affi nity with the infectious rhythm of swing. LS: You may recall Linedancer
magazine asked you a few questions last year on your Xmas album. How did the album fare? Kate - Our Christmas album was so much fun to record, tour and promote. We had such a great time preparing and performing our Christmas show, it’s a time if year that’s very special to all if us. We started gigging as a band singing at London’s Cafe de Paris during their Christmas season in 2004 and for all of us, music plays such a big part in our family Christmases, around the piano singing carols and old Christmas songs. It was such a fun album to make. And that’s how we started working with Michael Bublé. He loved our Christmas album so much he asked us to sing on his. So we must’ve done something right! LS: Wow, great news and something
else to look forward to. Tell me a little about this new release. Why “Hollywood”? Stephanie - We wanted to make an album that was a celebration of our love of Old School Hollywood, its icons and its classic movie themes. The world of
classic Hollywood has directly infl uenced us as a band. We celebrate the work ethic of the time. You know…. people who worked hard for their art and perfected their talent would rightly earn their star on the Hollywood walk of fame. We adore the glamour and stars of the time, my favourite being Rita Hayworth, and we wanted to encapsulate all the elements we love, in the songs we’ve chosen. We also wrote the title track to the album which is its opening statement about the pursuit of fame and getting your name in lights! LS: The album is really made up of very
well known classic tunes. Some may think it is a brave choice commercially. Did you have trouble “selling” it to your record company? Marcella - On the contrary, as soon as
we started discussing it with them we found that we were all as excited about it as one another. It just seemed like it was meant to be. LS: How did you get to choose those particular standards? Any disagreements? Kate - Coming up with a list of possible standards to arrange was not a problem, we all had such strong ideas that we all agreed with, it was harder having to scale it down to 11 track choices. No arguments but we had to let go of some songs that we would’ve loved to work on. LS: You are well known for your witty versions of well known songs. How does it work between the three of you, who decides? Stephanie - We always choose to cover songs that we ourselves are fans
of. Then you know it’s coming from the right place from the start. We each have individual tastes and preferences and will work individually on arranging a song we feel we have a strong idea for. We then work together on injecting the fun and personality into the arrangement and bringing our ideas to life. LS: The Puppini Sisters have a
following in Europe, how big is your fan base and are you aware of it? Marcella - Yes, we do! We have a huge following in France, Germany and Italy. We also have fans all over the US and we are doing a lot of work in Russia. We have a very dedicated fan base who will travel miles to see us. LS: This collection of tunes may well interest Line dance choreographers….. How would you feel if a dance with a song of yours made it internationally? Kate - That would be amazing…
We’d love that. Not that I’ve got many dance moves that others would want to emulate... LS, And fi nally what are the immediate plans for the Sisters? Stephanie - Our collaboration with Michael Bublé which features on his upcoming Christmas album is out this month is our next step. In November we will have toured Germany and France to promote ‘Hollywood’. When we are back, we begin our run of special dates in the UK to perform our ‘Christmas With The Puppini Sisters’ show. Then we’ll take a short but much needed break over the Christmas holidays as our new album is released on the 26th December.
