Introducing the ISTD

There are a multitude of dance styles throughout the world and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) offer a range of dance styles to cater for everyone’s interests, whether you wish to attend classes once a week for fun or intend to make dance your career. Here’s how….

For more than 100 years the ISTD has

provided training for dance teachers and examiners, enabling them to enter their students for examinations, develop new techniques and spread the joy of dance. As one of the world’s leading dance

examinations board the ISTD covers the full spectrum of dance genres – from Ballet to Ballroom and Street to Salsa – and each year we hold upwards of 250,000 grade examinations and medal tests. The Society offers 12 faculties of dance

including Classical Ballet (both Cecchetti Classical Ballet and Imperial Classical Ballet), Classical Greek Dance, Club Dance, Disco/Freestyle/Rock ‘n’ Roll (including Country and Western), Latin American, National Dance, Modern Ballroom, Modern Theatre, Sequence, South Asian Dance and Tap Dance. DANCE magazine,

the ISTD

membership publication, are sent out to its 7,500 members worldwide each quarter to keep them informed of all of the Society’s activities and events, while the ISTD’s Library holds books on all of the disciplines as well as a wealth of general background information on related subjects and dance industry resources. As a registered educational charity, the

ISTD’s mission is to educate the public in the art of dancing in all its forms, to promote knowledge of dance, to provide up-to-date techniques for its members and to maintain and improve teaching standards. The ISTD supports and trains their

members through a wide variety of courses, summer schools and congresses, updated teaching syllabi and techniques upon which to train dancers for the profession. Many of those members are leading

figures in the dance industry around the world, from esteemed West End choreographers and legendary teachers, to up-and-coming stars of the future. Competition for jobs within the

dance sector is fierce and the need for recognised teaching qualifications is more critical than ever. Whether you’re a young student just

starting out, an advanced dance teacher with years of experience or a professional dancer looking for a career change, with a recognised dance teaching qualification from the ISTD you can open your horizons to a much wider range of opportunities across the private and public sectors. The ISTD’s portfolio of teaching

qualifications is broad and varied to offer current and potential dance teachers qualifications that are up-to- date, relevant to the latest developments within the sector, recognised nationally and internationally and that suit them no matter where they are either in their career or in the world. The Society are currently putting

the finishing touches to three optional qualifications for experienced dance practitioners: the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy, a Higher Education conversion route to the BA (Hons) in Professional Practice: Dance Education, and the MA in Professional Practice: Dance Technique Pedagogy. Also this year, the ISTD is proud to present

a unique examination that is designed to embrace the full range of dance styles within our faculties. Candidates for the ISTD 2012 Award may be entered by any ISTD teacher on a global basis until 31st December 2012. For more information on dance teaching
