The top view of the sub-roadbed (left) re- veals the layers of glued strips. Once the section is done the top surface (right) of the roadbed must be planed smooth. Normally, a second person must hold the shop vacuum in order to keep the hose out of the way for the power planer.

al’s flexibility. This results in those flowing curves. With two people working the addi-

tional splines go very quickly. One per- son applies hot glue to the strip, then the other person pushes the strip onto

the center spline with help from the first person. The glue sets almost in- stantly. Don’t worry if the strips are not perfectly level with each other. Just keep applying strips until the sub- roadbed is the width you wish. At one

point on our railroad, our roadbed is wide enough for three tracks. Once the sandwich is six or seven strips wide, it is incredibly strong. We found that it is best not to have the ends of two strips line up, so we keep the ends staggered,

The tools and materials for securing the cork to the sub-roadbed are displayed above. The acrylic caulking compound makes a good adhesive and it is easy to apply (right).
