Work in progress and work done. Ken Goslett has been building the kits offered by the An- thracite Railroads Historical Society for a “Baby face Baldwin,” DR-4-4-1500 A- and B-unit set. He reports that they were a fair bit of work and that the bodies are now essentially done. Equally important, he also said the shells and parts are among the finest resin castings he has ever seen. That also applies to Ken’s painting and decaling, as it does to Hiram Graves’ S scale BL2. Underneath that classic maroon and gold there is a styrene body and details that Hiram fabricated from scratch, totally scratch except for the very few items (fans) he salvaged from an S scale Geep. He has a Baldwin switcher in the works. See it next year?

Valley Railroad. Agreed, most of the talks were oriented to the region, not New England or someplace, but I still got a lot from them. All of us could. So much of our hobby activity is “in-

training here.

Go to www.greatesthobby.com and get links to hobby resources and reference materials, lists of train shows and events, and information about planning and building your first model railroad layout. We’ll even help you find a shop or club in your area willing to coach you one-on-one. It’s everything you need to know to start enjoying your new hobby. ward leading,” that is, we tend to focus on our main interests and become more and more isolated. An important aspect of these RPM’s is that they offer a great opportunity for us to not only see the work of others, but also the re- sults of their scholarship, which it is in so many cases. Even though this is a hobby, what we collectively know about railroading and equipment and history and technology is amazing. Now that we know all that, what are we going to do about it? Share. These meets are one more place to do it.

Prototype Rails: January 5-7 Next up? Prototype Rails, in Cocoa Beach, Florida, over January 5-7. This

has become, as previously said, “our ‘Winter National.’” This meet usually has 400-plus models on the tables, the sales tables of several major photo vendors, and selected sellers of mod- els, plus a first rate set of presenta- tions. See www.prototyperails.com for links

to photos of last year’s meet and other information. This is also the home of the “Shake & Take” hands-on clinics, balmy light breezes off the Atlantic (though not always) and afternoon lunch on the deck. The Hilton Hotel, 1550 N. Atlantic

Ave. (Highway A1a), Cocoa Beach, has a special room rate: $99.00. Call them at 321-526-0003 or 800-526-2606. Refer to Prototype Rails. Pre-registration is $35.00, payable to Prototype Rails. Mail it to Marty Megre- gian, 480 Gails Way, Merritt Island, FL 32953. See you there!—BILL S.
